Above is a map of the Northern part of Denham Springs. Throughout the map, I have marked several placemarks of important features in the city that help define the city's landscape. If you click on the placemarks, you will notice several images that I took while researching associated with the placemarks.
Where is this place? Denham Springs is located in Louisiana, just one exit East from Baton Rouge, the state's capitol. There is a major interstate that runs through the middle of Denham Springs. This is interstate I12. I12 is a very important interstate of Louisiana. It connects Baton Rouge to many other interstates and major cities in the United States, such as Atlanta, Mobile, and Houston. Connecting to a previous theme, this contributes to the theme of mobility in the town. Many people pass through the city, stopping for travel, shopping, and more.
What contributes to the landscape? There are 4 factors that contribute to landscape of an area, natural landscape, cultural landscape, human landscape, and symbolic landscape. To evaluate the landscape in Denham Springs, I looked at how roads were constructed, the flow of traffic, materials used to build houses, style of houses, types if businesses and more. Besides the current state of the city, a great way to determine to what contributes landscape is by looking at the area's history. Like Haiti and Little Vietnam, Denham Springs suffered devastation due to a natural disaster. In 2016, Denham Springs experienced a flood. 80 percent of homes in Denham Springs flooded during the catastrophic event. This left many residents without homes, work, and school. Much of the city had to reconstruct and rebuild after. This greatly impacted to the landscape of Denham Springs.
This is an image taken from an article published by WAFB during the 2016 flood.
How does this event contribute to landscape? Using Lewis' "The Axiom of Common Things." Using this axiom, I tried to find common trends within the landscape. One of the many trend I saw was the way houses were built. Many houses were raised and/or built up. This trend can be directly related to the Amite river, that flows near Denham Springs and the PTSD many residents suffered during the Flood of 2016. Many of houses were built on stilts, were off the ground, or were built up on a large house pad.
