Mobility 2: Exercise 7

This map displays data of the voyage of the Dutch slave trade. The data in this map displays ships that were sent out, slave deaths, departure ports, and hurricanes. The slave deaths can be linked to the hurricane patterns. When voyaging, it makes sense that the ships would encounter bad weather. The storms caused rough seas. This bad weather can cause deaths on the ship. I can imagine that many slaves got injured in the weather or the ship actually never made it to the ending point. Despite weather, other factors that could have affected slave deaths were the conditions at the departure port. It is no secret that the ports had horrible conditions. They were extremely dirty causing lots of illnesses. There was likely much shortages of food and water. There could have been many reasons that related to slave deaths during the Dutch voyage. However, it can be assumed that the main two causes can be related to lack of healthcare and advanced technology.
