Mobility 1: Exercise 6

Image from "ESSAFF South Africa" of a rice field in Western Africa.

This is a map of rice cultivation fields in South Carolina and in West Africa. There are 5 fields highlighted for each location. The fields in South Carolina are indicated by a yellow pin mark and the fields in West Africa are indicated by a purple pin mark. The fields are then outlined by a polygon with the corresponding color.  This visualization helped me better understand Judy Carney's research. Searching along each of the rivers, I was able to identify the fields just based on knowledge of rice fields from the previous reading. Western Africa has been very well-known for their unique techniques within these rice fields. So, it is no secret that these practices would have transported with the African slaves to Eastern America. This is what Judy Carney highlighted in her research and what Sluyter wrote about in his writing. This is where mobility comes in. The technique diffused with the slaves from Western Africa to Eastern America.  I saw many similarities between to two completely different places. Shapes and sizes may be different between the two places, however, the overall concept is extremely similar. The rice fields use a unique way of water and irrigation to properly water the plants while still being able to efficiently harvest.
